Champagne Wishes

Today I have expensive taste...
...if only I could indulge it.
Ohhh...to be tall & willowy & able to sport long-legged tailored trousers... Wouldn't these just be great on casual Fridays?

Gap's Tailored Jeans

Maybe paired with this lovely little number? I'm a firm believer that adding a tailored jacket immediately makes any outfit cocktails-after-work-worthy... Especially in this sweet cream color with the gathered pockets.
Ivory Crepe Double Breasted Jacket

I'd even endure heel-blisters for these little sling-backs. I'm a fan of the subtle blue and the wood heel.

Vena Cava+Tenoversix - The Kareem

This blouse just screams spring... I love the flattering drape of the material and the length of the sleeve. And paired with that skirt? Check out that scalloped hem and accented belt. Yum.

TOMTOM - Tie Dye Suede Wrap Bracelet

Okay and this one? I'm almost tempted to try my hand at.

Simple chunky chain-link bracelet.
Tie-Dyed, knotted, suede overlay
I could do this! Or some variation thereon.
And there, kiddOs, is where my projects come from.
Drool over enough fashion you can't afford, and at some point you're bound to find something you can reproduce cheaper and easier.

Happy Tuesday

On Mothers Day...

Another Mother's Day has come and gone...

It was Mini Marathon Weekend (more on that later) which meant the entire family was in town for the weekend. This is such a rare occasion, that we tend to try and pack every possible run, walk, beer, daytrip, hug, glass of wine, snuggle, smile, retold story and laugh into those two days.

So today? I'm exhausted. But in the best sort of way.

My quads twinge from Saturday's race every time I sit down or descend stairs.
My cheeks still hurt from smiling and laughing so hard this weekend.
The tops of my shoulders are the tiniest bit pink from sun.
And my heart is full.
Mainly because of these folks right here:

It's gotten to the point where I cannot fathom my life without The Munchkins.
I recall, when pregnant with The Biz, people telling me that I'd forever catalogue my life as pre- and post- kids. And they're right in a way. But the funny thing is that no one tells you that the years before children take on a fuzzy sort of dream-like quality; to the point where you only remember those early years in the way that you remember a story told to you once, while drifting off to sleep.

It is the strangest and most awe-inspiring thing to see your heart walking around outside your body. How, in the blink of an eye, these tiny people that we MADE have gone from infants to independent little people all on their own.

They are the best thing I've ever done.

The are the source of both my greatest joy, and on certain days, my greatest challenge.

In a heartbeat they can go from making my want to tear my hair out in frustration, to making me melt in the face of their kindness to each other when they think no one's looking.

Mr. Man has taken to tossing one arm, casually, around my shoulders when we are seated. As if he's already as protective of me as he is of his sisters. And I can already picture him, a teenagers and towering above me, doing the same thing after strolling in the house from school some random Wednesday and it terrifies me. And Belle, so thirsty for approval, mothers them both and me; reminding me to set alarms, pack lunches, buckle seatbelts. Much to my chagrin, I know the days are coming when I'll need those reminders more than I care to admit. And so I force myself to smile and not become irritated when she asks, for the tenth time on our 15 minute car trip, if I'm certain I know exactly where I'm going... And Monkey, who need only grin half-heartedly and show a single dimple to have everyone eating out of the palm of her hand, refuses to let her age or stature defeat her. She is fearless and ruthless in her loyalty to both her siblings and her friends. She, who will forever suffer the curse of the youngest child, is animated in her enjoyment of life. She holds no qualm at expressing either her dissatisfaction or delight in the world around her.

The Munchkins with MY mom...who still pours me coffee and reheats slices of pizza for me without even asking when I walk in the door. Who still checks to be sure we all have a jacket on when we leave her house. Who still carries extra kleenex in her purse knowing we'll need it. Who still calls me when she's on a shoppers high or makes an amazing purchase (on clearance!). Who still takes the time to hand write thank you notes. Who still builds us each Christmas Stockings and Easter Baskets. Who still puts up with us...despite our inanities, or perhaps because of them. Who I love more now that I am a mom myself, if that's even possible...

They give Mother's Day meaning for me.
And I both long for, and harbor a secret dread of, the day when they are grown.
I want some small piece of them to stay small, to need me, to curl up against me on the couch and tuck their toes under my legs, to always want to sidle up to me and slip their tiny hands into mine just for the pleasure of wrapping my fingers around theirs and knowing they are mine.

Also...here's my sister...feeding a giraffe...

Just because it's an awesome picture.

Packet Pickup Day!

It's Packet Pickup Day!!!
Nicki & I made our way over to The Convention Center over our lunch break & retreived our bibs & $50 Tshirts and assorted over freebies and goodies from the melee that is the annual One America 500 Festival Mini Marathon Expo.

It's always such a treat to talk blisters and race strategy with random runners.
We shopped a bit and strolled a bit.
We sampled power bars and energy drinks.
We spun the wheel at the St. Vincent's Booth (always a must - they have the best swag every year).
It's just one more step in the build up to the weekend that I get excited about every year!

Such a pretty day for packet pickup... Blue skies, fluffy white clouds...
$5 says it's 40 degrees & raining Saturday morning. *le sigh*

We're moving so fast you can hardly see us!
We trained reallllllly  hard for this. Hah!

it's true. i do.

i love this print.
i'm torn between buying it and seeing if i can create my own in a similar style...
i probably ought to just buy it.

A Thousand Little Pieces

What do you do when one of your insane friends mails you a care package full of 1,000 brightly colored paperclips?

Make jewelry.
Of Course.

I armed myself with a pair of needle nose pliers (which makes working with the colored clips so much easier). You just need to have a care not to clip the colored coating right off the clips when you bend & swirl.

I've never been much into jewelry making (I've got friends that bead and bend). But I'm beginning to see the appeal. Even on such a tiny, kitschy level as this, there's a huge instant-gratification aspect to the process.

The Munchkins poured out the entire pouch of paper clips and had a blast organizing and counting the clips by type and color and size.

I'm slowly but steadily working my way through the piles, making rose rings and paperclip people and other-shaped clips (hearts, rings, swirlies) with which to attach papers.

I'm contemplating Teacher Gifts for year's end... and thinking perhaps just a nice set of notecards and some fun, twisted paper clips attached to some stiff cardstock decorated by the kiddos would make a nice little low-budget gift...

Isn't it funny how inspiration can just jump out at you from all angles if you're open to it?

I'm working on a tutorial for the rings...I'll have one complete with pictures up later this week.

I have the weirdest. best. most amazing friends ever.

i should be...

it is nearly ten oclock.
i should be cleaning the kitchen.
the sink needs a good scrub and the dishwasher needs to be unloaded and i could clean out the fridge...

it is nearly ten oclock.
i should be doing laundry.
there is at least a full load in each of the kids room, not to mention my own...

it is nearly ten oclock.
i am in the middle of four major sewing projects, two of which i could finish with a dedicated two hours of sewing and binding...

it is nearly ten oclock.
i should be organizing the hall closet. i should be cleaning out the desk in the front room. i should be folding laundry. i should be getting up to put in a workout dvd or at the very least do a few sit ups to make myself feel useful.

it is nearly ten oclock. and i am doing none of those things.

i am breathing. i am relaxing. i am being completely still. just for a moment...

Royal Wedding Fever...

I did not catch the fever.

I did not picture myself covered head-to-toe in white taffeta and lace all day Friday.

I did not wake up at 4am EST just to watch the proceedings live on television.

I did, however, gaze longingly at photos of all the Royal headgear going on ... and the fancy schmancy dresses ... and the poise & elegance that poured off the women in attendance.

may also have scooped up 120 yards of white tulle at Hobby Lobby for a buck fifty...

I may also have splurged on some "authentic" teatime biscuits and treats from the International Foods aisle of my local grocery store...

I may also have picked up two huge bouquets of faux white roses at 75% off... and some hair doodads for the girls...and a cheapie little black silk bowtie for Mr. Man...

And Steph may have DVR'd the Royal Wedding...

And we maybe...just maybe...might have had ourselves a Royal Wedding Viewing Party fit for a queen...or at least a few princesses...and one zombie prince!

A quick How-To on the headbands:
I am constantly both surprised & pleased at the amount of crafts I end up cobbling together at the last minute with a bit of fabric & my hot glue gun.

The girls & I just sat down with a handful of $1 Store headbands & a giant roll of White Tulle and glued & pleated our way into some veils. I wrapped the base with some additional tulle to finish each on off.

And then, because giant protrusions from said head ornaments seem to be all the rage, we simply knotted & balled up some additional tulle and fastened it to the headband with a hair clip. Voila!
